Is OA for You? What is OA? Questions FAQs Eating Disorders

Everyone is welcome!

OA is open to people with all types of bodies.  You do not have to be overweight to benefit from the program.  As Tradition 3 states: "The only requirement for OA membership is a desire to stop eating compulsively." I

It is possible to eat compulsively without gaining weight - such as in cases of anorexia or bulimia. People with these eating disorders can also benefit from the program.  Thus attending any OA meetings can be beneficial for these eating disorders - but there is one particular meeting on Friday at 5:30 PM in San Jose that has a special focus on:

  • young people,
  • compulsive overeating,
  • compulsive exercising,
  • anorexia and
  • bulimia.

Thus individuals who are anorexic or who practice bulimia are welcome to attend this meeting on weekly basis.

See Kim's Story for the story of a local OA member who suffered from bulimia.

Also see this link (from the www.oa.org website) for a discussion of how people with diverse eating disorders have been helped by a referral to OA.
